Cavan Fiddle Studio

I want my students to be as well rounded as possible and so I teach a combination of learning by ear, learning to read music notation, and learning to read fiddle tablature.

Students are welcome to bring digital recording devices to their lesson or I can e-mail recordings of myself playing our new tunes. Listening to music is a large part of becoming a musician and I require that my students devote part of every day to music listening.

I come from a long Suzuki background and I am in the process of being certified to teach all of the Suzuki books. I am currently certified through the early Suzuki books for students who are interested in building their classical music repertoire along with their fiddle repertoire.

Students may be dropped off for their lesson but parents are always welcome to stay.

I forgo traditional recitals in favor of other public playing opportunities such as the monthly Irish sessions at the Iowa City Senior Center, the annual hootenanny and potluck, inviting students to sit in on family friendly Beggarmen performances, and other performance events as they come up.

Lessons are $25 for a 30 minute lesson, $35 for a 45 minute lesson, or $45 for a 60 minute lesson. I give a 5% discount when you pay for 4 or more lessons at a time. I try to be as flexible as possible with scheduling makeup lessons within reason.
